Middle School

Ages 12 – 15

After our students complete the Elementary program, they will embark on our Secondary program. They are entering a world that is changing for them. They are adopting and adapting to a new purpose. At this level the focus is to foster and develop the skill of critical thinking, the ability to achieve and manage independence and self awareness, and a proper sense of how they fit in society. Learning in our environment prepares adolescents for what is ahead. And, what is ahead, is above and beyond what can be learned in a classroom.

The Montessori Classroom

One of the unique advantages in the Montessori classroom is the encouragement given to adolescents to expand their horizons and explore new dimensions beyond the immediate learning situation.

Valorization

. Valorization is Montessori’s term for the adolescent’s process of becoming a strong and worthy person. Valorization comes gradually to the adolescent as he or she realizes they are useful and capable of effort. This is accomplished only by the work of the mind, hands, and heart. It happens when adolescents have appropriate responsibilities and expectations; when they are able to experience the joy that comes from successfully meeting challenges, and the character building that occurs when they have made poor decisions.

Hands-on Materials

Paper and pencil have merit, but when combined with concrete learning materials and an unlimited ceiling, the adolescent reaps the greatest benefit – meeting his or her own need for understanding.

Hands-on Experiences

As the student progresses through each Montessori level, they increase their opportunities for real-life experiences. Field trips are an essential part of the Montessori experience, and all ages participate.
